Two Hays students forgotten on a school bus

HAYS, Kansas – A first ride on a school bus turned scary as a pair of kids were forgotten.

Kaden, 6, and his 5-year-old sister, Macey, didn’t know they needed to transfer to a different bus so they sat in their seats.

When the driver returned to the bus barn, he got off and locked the bus not realizing two children were still on board.

“I saw him open the door,” said Kaden

Video shows the bus driver getting off the bus for the day with the pair of kids in clear sight.

Their mother, Lisa Dempsey, put them on the bus Monday.

“I had no instructions on that there was a transfer needed at all so the kids had no idea they needed to get off.”

Kaden and Macey eventually ended up back at the bus barn where they were left locked on board.

“It’s a bad day. We’ll be on here forever,” said Macey in the video.

“Not forever, don’t say that,” said Kaden in the video.

A safety feature on USD 489 buses requires the driver to walk to the back to the bus before he or she can exit.  In this particular case, the driver’s route was so short, the system was never activated.

“We have visited with all the other drivers and reiterated the safety feature that we have, process we have that all drivers, when they turn the motor off, they are supposed to walk to the back of the bus and then exit the bus,” said Dr. Will Roth, USD 489 Superintendent.

It was a few minutes later that another driver pulled up behind Kaden and Macey’s bus and saw that pair on board.

“This is a very serious offense. Obviously, we take children’s safety as our utmost responsibility, and we take these things very seriously. Our driver has been released and will not be driving for us anymore,” said Roth.
