Study shows mental health workforce aging

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A new study shows that 40 percent of those working at North Carolina’s 14 mental health institutions are at least 50 years old.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported ( the study commissioned by the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research showed that the study showed nearly 10 percent of the workers were 61 or older.

Women made up more than two thirds of the workforce last year. About half of the workers have no more than a high school degree.

North Carolina has three psychiatric hospitals, three alcohol and drug abuse treatment centers, three centers for people with intellectual and development disabilities, two residential programs for children and three neuro-medical treatment centers.
