LATROBE, Pennsylvania — As her dying wish, a Pennsylvania woman wanted to see her son get married.
That wish was granted Friday as her son waited for his bride to walk down the aisle of the Latrobe Hospital chapel.
Anna Mae Kern, 63, of Donegal, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. After years of remission, her cancer returned in 2011.
Since then Kern underwent a double mastectomy and is receiving chemotherapy to treat the illness.
Knowing that she may not have long to live, Kern asked her son to marry his girlfriend, something couple had been planning to do at a later date.
But knowing how much it meant for his mother to participate in their special day, Kern’s son and his soon-to-be wife moved up the date to Friday and married at the hospital where Kern is being treated.
During an emotional ceremony, Ashley Leighty, 27, of Indian Head, married Adam Kern, 31, of Indian Head in front of more than a dozen family members — including Adam’s mother.
Hospital members helped the couple plan the event, complete with flowers and cake.
