WICHITA, Kansas – Police have arrested three men in connection to a gang shooting that seriously injured a 20-year-old man.
Two of the three suspects are documented gang members. The victim is a gang member as well. He’s now in stable condition at Wesley and is expected to survive.
It happened in the 1100 block of S. Prairie Park just after 2 a.m. Sunday.
“We heard three gunshots and then like another six or something,” said Tabitha Thompson, neighbor.
It was a scary situation for some residents early Sunday morning.
“There was a guy laying on the ground down there and then a whole bunch of people around him screaming,” said Thompson.
“I ran inside and got my phone and called 911,” said Delyana Montidoro, neighbor. “The whole time I just kept telling them he’s dead, he’s dead!”
Police arrived on scene to find the victim bleeding in the middle of the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
“He was shot five times, and he’s very uncooperative with officers,” said Sgt. Bart Brunscheen, Wichita Police Department.
Police say in spite of recent, high-profile cases involving gang violence, gang-related crime in Wichita is at or slightly below average when compared to the last six years.
“We don’t like any of it but unfortunately it does occur,” said Lt. Scott Heimerman. “But this years really no different than any other year for us.”
Statistics provided by the district attorney’s office show drive-by shootings are up 100% from 2012 to 2013 with 10 this year compared to 5 last year.
Aggravated assaults tied to gangs are also up from 18 in 2012 to 29 this year.
But gang-related homicides are down from seven last year to five in 2013.
