Health professionals get loan repayment awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The state Health Department has announced the recipients of loan repayment awards in a program that helps health professionals who work in underserved areas pay student debts.

The awards are given by the Health Professional Loan Repayment Board. The program aims to help retain providers in underserved communities, address health professional shortages that cause health disparities and improve access to care.

This year’s recipients include eight doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners from community health centers in Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, West Warwick and Woonsocket.

The recipients were announced Tuesday.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Foundation, the Rhode Island Health Center Association and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan each contributed $25,000 to the program. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
