WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police found a puppy beaten to death in a home.

It happened Monday night in the 2600 block of East Elm.

Police say 28-year-old Brian Ashley Jackson was arrested.

Officers were responding to a burglary in progress call around 11:30.

When they entered the home, they noticed a small puppy that recently died.

Police say the puppy was beaten with a baseball bat.

The incident has upset many animal lovers.

“This is tragic and horrible. I feel so terrible for what happened to that poor animal. There’s no reason for it and here we’re taking care of 16,000 animals a year, and it breaks my heart,” said Jennifer Campbell, Kansas Humane Society.

Jackson was arrested for cruelty to animals.

He is being held on a $25,000 bond.

The case has not been presented to the district attorney.

Officers found no evidence of burglary.
