Bodies of CHP officer, relative to be sent home

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials say no memorial services are scheduled in Las Vegas before the bodies of an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and his brother-in-law are sent home to Visalia, Calif.

Veteran CHP Officer Jesus Manuel Magdaleno Jr. and his sister’s husband, Felix Brandon Cruz III, died trying to stop a Las Vegas Strip vehicle theft.

It’s unclear if the alleged thief, 29-year-old James Robert Montgomery of Tustin, Calif., will be able to make an initial court appearance Wednesday. Police say he’s still hospitalized.

Montgomery faces felony murder, kidnapping and other charges.

Cruz was pronounced dead Monday evening a Las Vegas hospital. Magdaleno died at the scene of the Sunday crash.

Police say Magdaleno and Cruz were in Las Vegas for Magdaleno’s bachelor party. He would have been married in September.
