DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart is investigating the unusual drug case after 285 pounds of marijuana was delivered to the wrong person.

Lenhart told 2 NEWS his office was contacted on June 19 by a county resident who said he found the drugs inside a new gun safe that he had delivered to his house.

The Champion trophy gun safe was manufactured in Noglaes, Mexico, according to Lenhart, and transported to the Sportsman’s Den in Shelby, Ohio by Con-Way Trucking.

Sportsman’s Den then shipped it to the Shelby County customer.

Lenhart said investigators believe the pot was put in the safe at some point between Mexico and Shelby. The driver of the truck that brought the safe across the border, a U.S. citizen, is now missing and investigators said they have no leads on how the drugs got inside the safe or where it was going.

The 285 pounds of marijuana has an estimated street value of $420,000.

Agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are assisting with the case.
