Lake swim to raise funds to fight cystic fibrosis

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (AP) — More than a dozen swimmers plan to cross 14.2 miles of Lake St. Clair to raise money for a 12-year-old boy with cystic fibrosis.

The “Swimming St. Clair” group is scheduled to swim Monday morning from Harsens Island to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, northeast of Detroit.

A spokesman says the group may have to swim from the yacht club to Harsens Island if wind conditions are adverse. The crossing is expected to take about eight hours.

Funds raised will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and a medical trust fund for 12-year-old Rickie Geyer, of Grosse Pointe Park. His father is one of the swimmers.

Rickie was diagnosed in 2007. The disease causes the lungs to fill with mucus, making it difficult to breathe.
