Blunt force trauma cited in fatal football injury

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a high school football player who died after a scrimmage suffered blunt force head and neck trauma.

Betty Honey, an investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office, says 16-year-old Deantre Turman fractured a vertebrae in his upper spinal cord during a preseason scrimmage at Benjamin Banneker High School in south Fulton County Friday night.

Officials have said Turman, a student at Creekside High School in Fairburn, was injured during what appeared to be a routine tackle.
