WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita firefighters helped rescue two canoers who were caught in high water.

They entered the river near 21st and West Street just before 2 p.m.

Once they were in the water, they realized the water was too rough.

Both grabbed a ladder under the 21st Street bridge.

One texted a friend who called 911.

Firefighters responded and rescued both men.  Their canoe ended up floating down the river.

One man described his frightening experience.

“We’ve done it a couple of times. It was just low enough to were our boats can slip in. It took us under. Very scary, it’s not worth doing.”

Authorities say the men could face misdemeanor charges because the water levels were high.

The men said they didn’t know about the city ordinance.

The rescue took about 30 minutes.

Both men were wearing life vests.
