GM founder’s descendants visiting Flint area

FLINT, Mich. (AP) — The great-grandsons of General Motors founder William “Billy” Durant are coming to the area where the global automaker got its start.

The Flint Journal reports ( ) that Daniel “Duke” Durant Merrick and Gordon Merrick will be in Flint on Saturday morning to attend the unveiling of their great-grandfather’s statue during Saturday’s Back to the Bricks car show. The descendants also will be taking part in a “meet-and-greet” event Thursday evening at the Davison Country Club.

Host James Dee Dowsett II said he anticipates that Thursday’s event will be “like an old George Jones concert,” with singing and storytelling. Duke Merrick is a veteran singer-songwriter who hails from Charlottesville, Va.

The bronze sculpture of Durant will be placed in a downtown plaza that features automotive giants Louis Chevrolet and David Buick.
