Wichita school board approves budget, contract

WICHITA, Kansas— Wichita’s school board approved a contract Monday night with USD 259 teachers.

It includes a 2.4% compensation package, plus a 1% one-time only improvement to the salary schedule.

88% of teachers in the union voted in favor of the contract.

At Monday’s meeting, the school board also approved a nearly $640 million budget for the next school year.

It provides for an additional 300 students enrolled in USD 259.

Yet board members say per pupil funding is down nearly $600 per student from 2009, in part because of state funding cuts.

The district proposed no increase in local taxes for this budget, but board members said that would be difficult to do again in the future.
