HAYS, Kansas – Shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, a Hays police traffic stop turned into a pursuit and barricaded subject.
A 24-year-old man fled the scene of the traffic stop after the officer asked him to perform some sobriety tests.
The officer was pulled by the man’s vehicle as he drove off.
The Hays officer received minor injuries and was able to free himself from the car and followed the fleeing driver.
The chase led through downtown Hays until speeds became high and dangerous prompting the on call supervisor to call off the pursuit.
Officers found the suspect in a home in the 1000 block of Reservation Road.
The man barricaded himself inside the house and refused to come out.
A search warrant was obtained and the Special Situation Response Team was called out.
A Hays Police Department negotiator was called to the scene in an effort to gain compliance of the suspect for a peaceful resolution.
Several homes in the area were evacuated for safety reasons.
A warrant was served on the suspect by the Hays Police Department.
The suspect from Hays was taken into custody.
He is currently being held in the Ellis County Jail for pending criminal charges of Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, DUI, Felony Obstruction and Felony Eluding.
