Chicken meal still being removed from train derailment site

Train Accident

HAYS, Kansas – Chicken meal that was spilled during a train derailment last month in Hays is still being cleaned up.

Officials hope to have it removed from the rail yard by August 23rd.

A contractor responsible for removing the stockpile has transferred it to the Barton County landfill, and an odor masking agent has been sprayed on materials in the rail yard to reduce the smell from the meal left.

On Tuesday, several rail cars are scheduled to be delivered to remove meal that is still on the ground.

Union Pacific is working with the contractors to move the derailed locomotives and chicken meal from under them.
