Tuberculosis patient who left SC hospital is in NC

LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) — Health officials say a homeless man with tuberculosis who walked out of a South Carolina hospital is now being treated in North Carolina.

The Fayetteville Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1bfxrmM) that Robeson County Health Department officials said 57-year-old Louis Rainone was brought by ambulance to Southeastern Regional Medical Center on Wednesday.

Tracy Jones, epidemiology supervisor with the Robeson County Health Department, said officials have notified the state’s Division of Public Health about the case. State officials couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.

Rainone left the hospital in Columbia Tuesday night. He had been undergoing treatment since May for the contagious bacterial lung disease that can be spread through the air.
