Bluejays favored in KCAC poll

WICHITA, Kansas – – Following the Kansas Collegiate Athletic College Football Media Day, votes were tabulated for both the KCAC Coaches’ and Media Preseason Polls.  Tabor College takes the top spot in each poll, with four first place votes in the coaches’ poll and 11 in the Media Poll.

In the Coaches’ Poll, two points separated Tabor College from Ottawa University, and Ottawa from Friends University. Tabor and Ottawa both pulled in four first place votes, while Friends University received one first place vote.  Kansas Wesleyan finished fourth in voting and received the last first place vote.

In the Media Poll, Tabor edged Ottawa by three votes. The Bluejays garnered 11 first place votes to the Braves’ seven. Friends finished third in voting, Kansas Wesleyan finished fourth.

Tabor finished 2012 with eight wins and two losses. In conference, the Bluejays posted a 7-1 record. The Bluejays boasted Mike Gardner as KCAC Coach of the Year and Billy Hickman as Assistant Coach of the Year.  Three of six Bluejays that were named First Team All-KCAC Members return for the 2013 season.  Tabor also returns two 2nd Team All-KCAC athletes.

Ottawa finished 2012 with eight wins and three losses. The Braves went 8-1 in conference, winning the KCAC title outright.  They traveled to Missouri Valley College in the opening round of the NAIA Football Championship Series where they fell to the Vikings, 56-21.

The KCAC is represented in the 2013 NAIA Football Coaches’ Spring Top 25 poll by #16 Ottawa University and #18 Tabor College the national office announced Wednesday, April 15.  Friends University also received votes.

Ten total ballots were cast in the Coaches Poll with head coaches unable to vote for their teams.  Media members, present at Courtyard Wichita at Old Town for the August 7 event, cast 18 total ballots.
