Calif. professor to be sentenced for arsons after son’s death

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California professor is scheduled to be sentenced today for setting a string of fires at his son’s high school after the teen committed suicide.

Prosecutors say University of California, Irvine Professor Rainer Reinscheid set fires at University High School in Irvine, an administrator’s house and a park after his son hanged himself when he was disciplined for allegedly stealing at the school.

Reinscheid faces up to 18 years in a state prison.

Prosecutors say Reinscheid also described in private emails a plot to attack his son’s fellow classmates and administrators. But no charges were filed related to the emails.
