Wichita Public Schools parents frustrated over slow enrollment process

WICHITA, Kansas– The school year hasn’t even started yet, but some Wichita Public Schools parents are already feeling the headache when it comes to enrollment.

Because unlike previous years, where everything was done online, registration this year will have to be done the old fashion way by pen and paper.

“I got here a little after 9:00 a.m. and it’s about 10:45 a.m. now,” said Beth Bell, parent.

It took a little longer than usual for Beth Bell to register her kids for school at McLean Elementary School Monday morning.

“Just the wait I guess is probably the biggest thing,” said Bell. “Just having to wait for so long is kind of frustrating.”

Registration came as easy as a mouse click for parents like Bell last year because everything was done online.

“You logged in enter your username and put all of your information in and you hit send then you got a confirmation back and you would just come in and pay,” said Bell.

But that changed when the district switched over to a new information system last spring.

“We have more than 50,000 students so to make sure all the information is carried over from one system to another system that just takes time,” said Susan Arensman, spokesperson for Wichita Public Schools.

“Maybe they should have started all of this a little sooner and maybe given everybody all the information that they need,” said Bell. “Because I know there was a few people that have come in that didn’t realize they had to have certain forms.”

The district admits there has been some confusion about enrollment at some schools.

“Some parents don’t realize they had to fill out all the forms,” said Arensman. “Schools sent home a form last year before th end of the school year and here are the forms you need to fill out and some parents did not have all those forms fill out.”

The district suggest that parents fill out the necessary forms before hand to ease the wait time.

“We know they have to wait in line and just to please be patient because the system will be better next year,” said Arensman. “This is just a growing pain that we have this year.”

Parents have until August 1st to register.
