Large explosion targets courthouses in east

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Security officials in Libya say two large explosions have hit courthouses in the city of Benghazi, leaving part of one of the buildings a pile of rubble.

An official in Benghazi says 10 people were wounded, two seriously, in the explosion outside one courthouse in the north of the city.

The courthouse was the site of the first protests against dictator Moammar Gadhafi in early 2011 that led to his ouster. It continues to be a hub for protests.

Another courthouse in eastern Benghazi was also reportedly hit.

Security officials say police are investigating if the explosions were the result of bombs. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak to media.

The city of Benghazi was the birthplace of the country’s uprising against Gadhafi’s rule and is also Libya’s second largest city.
