WICHITA, Kansas – Police say when the weather gets warm outside so does gang related criminal activity and they’re reaching out to the public to not tolerate gangs on their streets.
New reports show the number of gang violence is up in Wichita compared to last year and it’s a disturbing trend that has investigators and community groups searching for answers.
Godron Bassham is the executive director of the Wichita Crime Commission.
The non-profit organization works closely with law enforcement to fight crime in the community.
“The thing that’s important to remember about fighting gangs is that they generally don’t like public attention especially attention from the law enforcement agencies in our state,” said Gordon Bassham, executive director for the Wichita Crime Commission.
You may remember that on July 25th, a 25-year-old man was killed after a shooting at 15th and Green.
Police say the victim, a documented gang member was walking with two other members when they were approached by an SUV.
The victim was shot in the chest and he later died from his injuries.
Police say they have no information on the make or model of the SUV.
Bassham tells KSN News gang related cases can potentially be solved with the help from the community.
“If you see something that looks wrong in your community say something,” said Bassham. “Whether you say something anonymously to crime stoppers or whether you say something anonymously to 9-1-1 and ask not to be contacted by officers which is always an option, but the one thing citizens can do is be aware of their surroundings and be inform.”
