At least 39 dead in twin bombings in Pakistan

PARACHINAR, Pakistan (AP) — The death toll has risen to 39 from a pair of bombs that tore through crowds of shoppers in a busy market in northern Pakistan today.

The attack took place in a tribal area that borders Afghanistan. The market was full of people buying items for the evening meal that breaks the daytime fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

A government official in the region says in addition to the dead, at least 70 people were hurt. A doctor at the local hospital says the facility was overwhelmed by people seeking treatment.

There’s been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
