Republican says Obama economic speeches are waste of time

WASHINGTON (AP) — Instead of going out and giving speeches on the economy, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell says President Barack Obama should spend his time “working with both parties in Congress to grow the economy and create jobs.”

McConnell says speeches like the one Obama is giving today at Knox College in Illinois are a “colossal waste of time and energy.” He says, “Every time he goes out and gives one of these speeches, it generates little more than a collective bipartisan eye-roll.”

Obama is making a renewed push for policies to expand the middle class and help people he says are still treading water, years after the financial meltdown.

The White House is billing today’s speech as a major one, comparable in tone to the commencement address he delivered at the same college eight years ago, also about the economy. But he’s not expected to announce any new initiatives.

Obama speaks later today at the University of Central Missouri, and then tomorrow in Jacksonville, Florida.
