Militant attacks on north Sinai city kill 2

El-ARISH, Egypt (AP) — Security officials say militants in Egypt’s northern Sinai Peninsula have launched a coordinated attack on three locations in the main city of el-Arish, killing a soldier and a 25-year-old woman.

It’s the latest sign of growing strength of Muslim militants in the lawless desert peninsula.

A police camp in the Egyptian border city of Rafah also came under attack by militants, who fired rocket-propelled grenades at the building, wounding seven soldiers protecting the site.

Officials say militants used machine guns on a police club, a police station and a security post outside a bank in the center of el-Arish. The officials spoke anonymously in line with regulations.

Attacks have become more frequent in northern Sinai since the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi July 3.
