Son to adopt dog of man found dead in Kansas River

LAWRENCE, Kansas (AP) – A dog belonging to a Lawrence drowning victim has a now owner.

The Lawrence Journal World reports that 49-year-old Dwight Sexton was found dead Wednesday morning in the Kansas River. Now, his son, Brent, is coming from Colorado to adopt the Labrador retriever named Gabby.

Sexton and Gabby were well known to downtown Lawrence employees and shoppers. The pair could be found on Massachusetts Street two or three days a week.

Humane Society client care associate Rachel Guyer says man and dog were inseparable right to the end: Gabby never left Sexton’s side at the river. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
