PORT ORANGE, Florida (WESH) – A Port Orange, Florida woman was bitten by a police K9 on Wednesday night while the animal was searching for a lost child.

While officers searched the boy’s home, a K9 officer and his K9 Rex attempted to track the missing child.

As Rex tracked his legs and lead became entangled in loose palm fronds and debris.

Police said as the officer tried to free Rex the lead came off of his collar and he ran from the officer’s arms.

A woman appeared from behind some bushes as the K9 officer gave commands to the dog to stop, according to a news release.

Investigators said the K9 reacted and bit the female on the thigh, and then on the right hip as she tried to push the dog away. The officer quickly grabbed the K9.

Authorities said the woman was taken to a hospital to be treated and released.

The child was found unharmed inside his home tucked up under the dining room table.
