WICHITA, Kansas – A third child related to a deadly house fire last week in southeast Wichita has been placed into protective custody
On Wednesday afternoon, the Exploited and Missing Child Unit removed a one year old boy from the families care. Authorities say his case is connected to the death of 6-year-old Jakara Tloria Lashon Dickson, who died after suffering injuries in a house fire.
The fire started around 7 p.m. Thursday night in the 3900 block of East Countryside.
Three children were alone in the home when the fire started. Officials say Dickson was playing with a lighter and caught her clothes on fire. She ran into a bedroom where she tried to take off her burning clothes and set the room on fire.
Neighbors heard the smoke alarm going off and rushed to the burning home and helped the three children, ages 8,6 and 4, out of the burning home.
The mother showed up at the scene a short time later and was arrested on unrelated charges and suspicion of child abandonment.
Neighbors told KSN that the children had been left alone at the home before.
The two other children have been released from the hospital and are in police protective custody.
KSN has learned that the District Attorney’s office has now received the case from law enforcement.
The D.A. will now review the case to decide if there will be any charges against the mother.
