Zimmerman acquittal stirs protest in Calif. cities

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has called for peace and cut short an East Coast visit to return home following a clash between police and protesters angry over the outcome of the George Zimmerman trial.

Police shot beanbag rounds and arrested six people while breaking up relatively small demonstrations Sunday and before dawn Monday.

No injuries were reported but Garcetti’s spokesman says the mayor decided to return out of an abundance of caution.

Yusef Robb says the mayor supports non-violent protest.

The Oakland Tribune says police in that city confronted protesters who broke windows and blocked traffic Sunday night but there’s no word of any arrests.

A protest in San Francisco, meanwhile, was peaceful.
