Wingnuts win 11th straight


SIOUX CITY, Iowa – – The Wichita Wingnuts won its 11th game in a row Monday night with a 2 to 0 shutout of the Sioux City Explorers.

The game was scoreless going to the top of sixth inning. Second baseman Jake Kahaulelio walked and scored on first baseman’s C. J. Ziegler’s single to right.

Wichita added an insurance run in the ninth. Abel Nieves walked and advanced to third on a double by Cole Armstrong off the right-center field wall. David Amberson scored Nieves with a safety squeeze bunt.

Chris Smith earned the win scattering four hits with nine strikeouts and one walk in his 95-pitch performance through eight innings. Smith retired the leadoff batter in every inning.

Josh Dew picked up his 13th save in pitching a perfect ninth inning striking out two.

The Wingnuts pitching staff has seven shutouts this year.

The 11 straight wins tied a franchise record.

The Wingnuts and Explorers finish the series Tuesday night.
