Turkey’s president undergoes ear surgery

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Officials say Turkey’s president had surgery on his ear over the weekend and is in “good physical condition.”

Abdullah Gul has suffered from a recurring ear problem linked to both inner ears since 2006, when he was the country’s foreign minister. The problem has forced him to avoid flights and cancel foreign visits.

A brief statement from his office Wednesday said Gul underwent more surgery last weekend and that he spent a night in the hospital.

It says the 62-year-old Gul has now resumed his duties at his office in Istanbul. Gul’s role is largely ceremonial but he has the power to veto legislation and appointments.
