PORTLAND, Oregon (KGW) – On a picturesque evening Portland, Oregon’s Glenwood Park is a perfect place to unwind if you are a kid. Monday evening was not perfect if you ask Gavin Campbell.

“It wasn’t really scary,” said Gavin. “It was kind of.”

The 11-year-old was with a group of friends. They were all minding their own business when Gavin was approached by a boy two years older.

“He was walking up and he put the gun in my face, this far away, and he said, ‘give me the board,’ or he’s going to shoot me,” said Gavin. “I didn’t think it was a real gun because you could see it wasn’t.”

Gavin did not wait to find out. He handed over his skateboard. His friend, Kyle, called for help.

“I told him (Gavin’s dad) there was a kid with a BB gun and he was threatening to shoot Gavin if he didn’t give him the skateboard,” said Kyle Neal.

Gavin’s dad rushed over to the park. He got his son’s skateboard back, confiscated the gun, and held the boy until police arrived.

“It makes me feel really scared,” said Matthew Campbell. “They can’t come to the park and enjoy themselves without some kind of worry and stuff happening.”

Responding officers learned that the boy had also approached an 18-year-old woman, threatening to shoot her. He is also accused of walking up to a 12-year-old girl and demanding her iPhone.

The 13-year-old boy was lodged in the county juvenile detention center. He faces a second degree robbery charge, but additional charges could be added.
