WICHITA, Kansas – A newer trend in fundraising uses the internet to offer opportunities to artists that weren’t before possible.
A local musician is taking advantage of that opportunity to get his music played on the national stage.
“You have your whole life to put out your first album, then ten seconds to do your second so I’m gonna take my time on this one,” says avid guitar player Brandon Ellis.
He’s working with his brother Blake recording what will soon be his first album.
“There’s nothing like having complete creative freedom and getting to express your voice, this is going to be a big bucket list item for me,” says Brandon.
But it’s an expensive one.
Having foot the majority of the cost of recording himself, Brandon turned to website Kickstarter.com to try and finish the job.
His goal: $1,000.00 raised in a month.
After a slow start, the money started rolling in.
“So I raised $1,785 of my $1,000 goal, I raised it from 27 backers,” explains Brandon.
Through the website contributors donate to Brandon and Brandon gives back in return, offering signed albums and even concerts in return for those who believe enough to donate.
The belief has spilled over to his brother Blake.
“It’s given me incentive to do my own thing,” says Blake.
While helpful, the money can only do so much.
“Get out there and share it with people, no magic formula, just hard work and dedication, that’s something I’m willing to do, willing to pay the price, go all in,” says Brandon.
Brandon Ellis hopes to have his album released this fall.
He and his brother play shows across the Wichita area.
