El DORADO LAKE, Kansas (KSN) – A 29-year-old Wichita man went under the water while trying to retrieve a boat at El Dorado Lake and never came back up.
It happened just after 4 p.m. Friday at Goose Cove Campground near Bluestem Point.
Rescue crews raced to the area and searched for two hours before recovering a body.
Witnesses told the sheriff the man was trying to get a boat that had drifted from shore.
“He was out here with a friend and a family and the boat had drifted out into the water,” said Sheriff Kelly Herzet, Butler County. “The gentleman we are looking for went out into the water to retrieve the boat, and fell into the water and hasn’t been seen since.”
The person who told the man about the drifting boat says he warned him to put on a life jacket but he says the man did not.
Herzet says there’s a drop-off about 12 feet from shore and that’s where the man went under.
