Man arrested in Barton County after standoff with sheriff’s officers

GREAT BEND, Kansas – Barton County Sheriff’s officers responded to standoff an 490 SE. 58th Avenue Thursday after a person reported a domestic situation.

The victim told officials there was a subject threatening people with firearms.

Upon arrival, sheriff’s officers made contact with the suspect, Travis Beal, 38 of rural Ellinwood.

Officers were unable to convince Beal to exit the residence.

Beal indicated that he was armed and that he was not going to surrender to the officers.

After a short standoff, Beal attempted to get to another room in the residence where firearms were located, at which time he was overpowered by sheriff’s deputies and taken into custody.

Beal was placed under arrest and taken to the Barton County Jail,

He was charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He’s being held in lieu of a $40,000 bond.
