WICHITA, Kansas — A routine car stop in east Wichita Thursday night led police to a murder suspect they’ve been searching for since April.
Police arrested John Carter, 18, and booked him on suspicion of felony murder in the death of Ronald Betts.
Betts was shot to death at a home in the 400 block of North Emporia on the evening of April 18. Police believe his murder stemmed from a drug deal that went bad.
In the week following his death, police arrested three people but they were looking for others, including Carter.
Thursday night, police officers stopped a car for a routine traffic violation near 13th and Minneapolis. Carter was a passenger in the car.
He was arrested without incident.
Police plan to present the case to the district attorney next week. In the meantime, they continue to investigate Betts’ murder.
Investigators say they know who pulled the trigger, but they won’t say if it’s one of the people who’s already in custody or if it’s one of the people they’re still seeking.
