Hot spot forces workers to empty Cimarron grain elevator

CIMARRON, Kansas — Cimarron had a scare with a grain elevator Thursday.

A worker for Pride AG Resources noticed a grain bin at the elevator was unusually hot and realized the bin had a hot spot.

Workers spent the evening emptying out about 2,000 bushels of grain by hand to find the hot spot and spraying water on the grain to cool it down and control dust.

“Anytime we have grain that’s abnormally hot, we handle it with a great deal of care and what we decided to do was to involve the fire department so that we would do everything right,” said Skyler Hayes, Pride Ag Resources safety director.

K-23 was shut down for two blocks south of highway 50.

The businesses along that stretch were evacuated as a precaution, but officials tell us everything now is back to normal.
