Foothills wildfire near Denver persists

DENVER (AP) — More than 100 people in the foothills west of Denver remain evacuated from their homes because of a 500-acre wildfire.

Firefighters said they were hopeful that mandatory evacuations would be lifted as they anticipated making solid progress today fighting the Lime Gulch Fire.

A spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office stressed that ground crews were mainly the ones putting out the fire today, not air support.

Officials said it was 5 percent contained this morning. No structures were threatened, though firefighters warned that a hot, windy afternoon could change the prognosis quickly, and that it takes time to restore electricity to evacuated areas.
