WICHITA, Kansas — Dozens of people were evacuated after a two-alarm fire ravaged an apartment complex in west Wichita on Wednesday evening.

Crews were called to the Aspen Park Apartments, 8405 W. Central, at about 6:45 p.m.

The first firefighters on the scene only saw smoke coming from one of the buildings, but a short time later, they saw flames coming from the roof.

Only three units suffered damage, but all 16 units were evacuated.

Officials estimate the fire caused $140,000 in structural and content damage.

Wichita Fire Captain Robert Dusenbery said a careless smoker is to blame for the blaze.
