KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The mother of a Kansas City Chiefs player who killed his baby’s mother and then himself says she thinks family members on both sides should play a part in the child’s life.
Cheryl Shepherd of West Babylon, N.Y., is seeking custody of 9-month-old Zoey Belcher. The baby’s mother, Kasandra Perkins, was fatally shot Dec. 1 by Javon Belcher before he turned the gun on himself.
Perkins’ cousin, Sophie Perkins of Pflugerville, Texas, also has filed for custody.
Testimony in the custody fight began Tuesday with an expert in child psychology saying it wouldn’t be healthy for the baby to split her time between family members, who live 1,800 miles apart.
The hearings are scheduled to last three days. Commissioner Daniel Wheeler says he won’t make a ruling immediately.
