WICHITA, Kansas — Residents in a southeast Wichita neighborhood are on high alert after learning that a 76-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and robbed in her home last week.

It happened near the intersection of Lincoln and I-135.

“For the most part it’s a very quiet neighborhood fairly close knit,” said William Eveland, resident.

William Eveland is keeping a watchful eye in his neighborhood of 10 years Monday afternoon.

“It’s very shocking to say the least,” said Eveland.

After hearing news that two teenagers broke into the home of a 76-year-old woman last Friday morning.

Police say one of them committed a brutal crime.

“She reported that she was awaken by at least one intruder who was harmed with a gun. The intruder sexually assaulted her,” said Lt. Randy Renyolds, Wichita Police Department. “After the assault was completed several items of properties was taken from her residence.”

Police say, the suspects took off with her television and some jewelry.

An 18-year-old and a 17-year-old male were arrested in the 2400 block of Mesita just a couple of blocks away from where the crime took place.

Both teens are now facing charges of rape, aggravated robbery, and burglary.

“We also arrested a 22-year-old female who is the owner of that residence on Mesita and booked her into the Sedgwick County Jail for aiding a felon,” said Lt. Renyolds.

Police say that woman is believed to be the girlfriend of one of the suspects.

Eveland says news of the arrest brings a sense of relief for his neighborhood.

“It could happen in anybody’s neighborhood and unfortunately it happened in ours,” said Eveland. “Unfortunately it happened to one of our nicer elderly woman living here.”

Police believe this was a random act and that the victim did not know the suspects.
