DOE official got summer jobs for 3 of his children

WASHINGTON (AP) — An internal investigation has found that a senior Energy Department official was actively involved in securing summer jobs for his three college-aged children.

The official’s actions appear to violate federal rules that bar officials from securing government jobs for relatives. A report by the Energy Department’s inspector general does not name the official, but says he is a senior staff member in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The report says the department is considering “appropriate corrective action” but offers no specifics.

The report, released Monday, says the official contacted 12 Energy Department officials from seven different programs about summer jobs. All three children were hired last year.

Relatives of other officials — including one in the inspector general’s office — also got summer jobs at the agency. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
