CANYON LAKE, Texas (WOAI) – A Texas school bus driver is being hailed a hero.

Walter Wingo saved a boy’s life when he performed the Heimlich maneuver on him.

Damien Jennings, a student at Canyon Lake’s Mountain Valley Middle School, was on the bus Tuesday when he began to choke on a piece of gum.

Wingo says Damien held his hands up to his throat to show he was choking. That’s when Wingo pulled over and performed the life-saving Heimlich.

Damien’s mother was alerted to the situation before the bus arrived at her home. Once the bus pulled up, she got on and gave the bus driver a big hug.
