ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - A man is accused of driving drunk and crashing faced a judge Wednesday afternoon, but it’s what police said happened before the crash that’s really hard to believe.
Police said the crash happened Monday night at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Menaul. Officers said they found an open bottle of vodka in a vehicle, a shoe, a naked woman and a man hiding in an unlikely place.
Luis Briones appeared calm in Metro Court; a stark contrast to the man APD described Monday night. Police suspected the 25-year-old was driving drunk on Pennsylvania so they followed him. APD says Briones ran a red light and crashed into a car at the intersection of Menaul Boulevard.
His passenger, a woman, was thrown from the vehicle. Police say she was naked. According to a criminal complaint, Briones didn’t seem concerned about his lady friend and even tried to get away but a witness took his keys.
Police say Briones ran northbound on Pennsylvania, jumped into a bush and tried to hide in a cactus. So what got Briones into suck a prickly situation?
Police claim he and his lady friend got quite close inside his SUV before the crash.
According to the criminal complaint, “Briones had a pair of black shorts inside out and it appeared as if the two were having sexual intercourse of some sort while driving.”
In court, Briones was described as a flight risk with a lengthy record.
“Your honor we are concerned with the allegations written in the criminal complaint due to Mr. Briones alleged actions we do feel he is a flight risk and he was allegedly uncooperative with law enforcement.”
The woman thrown from the vehicle had cuts to her face and head. At last check she was in stable condition at a hospital.
The judge increased Briones’ bond to $25,000 cash only.
