Derby optometrist sentenced to federal prison

WICHITA, Kansas — A Derby optometrist has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for wire fraud.

Dr. Wade Abbey, 47, pleaded guilty in February to five counts of wire fraud. He admitted to collecting more than $500,000 for eye exams he didn’t perform.

An indictment filed last year alleges that the crimes were committed while Abbey and his wife were working as optometrists for Visions Doctors of Optometry.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says the two were paid an hourly wage and additional fees for each full eye exam they conducted. He says Abbey inflated the number of eye exams and provided false information to an accountant who paid them based on the false information.

A judge has sentenced Abbey to 41 months in prison. In addition he must pay $583,060 in restitution.
