ROSE HILL, Kansas – In Wichita, people are trying to get homes and vehicles repaired after hail ravaged parts of the city.
Even with so many hail dented cars and so few repair shops, you can still prevent a long wait getting your car fixed.
“We’ve been a lot busier,” says Vernon Hammond, the owner of Auto Body Connection in Rose Hill, where dimples mean dollars. “This is a little bit worse. We had a hailstorm here a couple years ago that was really, really bad and then last year the storm was half as bad, but this stuff is pretty bad.”
After last week’s hail storm and tornado, the locally owned shop keeps getting more calls every day.
“Commonly the estimates are running about $6,000, and that’s an average so they’re pretty beat up. It was pretty significant,” explains Hammond.
As a shop in a small suburban community outside Wichita, Hammond says he doesn’t have the long wait times.
“We’re starting to book up, but we’re obviously not booked up like the shops in town and we can get people in a lot quicker,” says Hammond.
He says he’s had a look at the forecast for this coming week and is pretty sure things won’t be slowing anytime soon.
“I actually have a guy that works here that’s kind of a weather guru kind of guy and he keeps us updated and he’s talking that tomorrow might be kind of rough,” says Hammond.
And he says the wait only gets longer.
“It’s awesome. I love it. The busier we are the better it is if we need more help we just bring in more people, I don’t have too many problems doing that so yeah, it’s a good thing.”
Even for shops located outside the metro Wichita area.
Hammond says, “Nobody’s gonna want to touch your car until you’ve contacted your insurance so call them and get a claim going. The longer you wait, the longer it’s gonna take.”
The higher cost in hail damage comes from bigger hail causing more cars to need panel replacement, rather than paintless dent repair
