WICHITA, Kansas — It’s not looking good for the Wichita Wings.

After the team was put up for sale, the Major Indoor Soccer League didn’t approve the potential buyers.

So as of now, the Wings won’t play next season.

It was just two short years ago Wichitans were excited to hear their Wings were back.

“The fan base is very strong here. Good people, good diehard fans,” explains Wings General Manager John Blazek.

After two successful seasons ranking first and third for attendance in the league respectively, today the announcement came – the Wings will not return next season.

Team owner Wink Hartman made the decision to sell the team in mid-March.

“Mr. Hartman is just wanting to slow down in life and he’s very invested in his Indy car that’s running in the Indy 500 Monday,” explained Blazek.

So several unnamed investors expressed interest in buying the franchise.

“Last thing I heard was there were local people very interested and then I heard today that it’s off. I think maybe there were some league complications,” says Blazek.

The news is likely a disappointment to fans.

The Major Indoor Soccer League says it’s trying to find an owner for the franchise within a 45-day period.

“The turf’s here, everything is here so you don’t want to lose 13 dates,” said Blazek.

Those 13 home games will be missing on next year’s calendar at Hartman Arena.

“I think the league would like to see a team here,” said Blazek. “You’ve got a great fan base, great people here. I was surprised when I heard it today too.”

Blazek says the loss of the Wings won’t affect any jobs at Hartman Arena.

He says he hasn’t heard about any changes affecting the Wichita Wild.
