Shockers drop tournament opener

NORMAL, Illinois – – Cody Forsythe pitched a complete game as the Southern Illinois Salukis beat the Wichita State Shockers 5 to 1 on the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament.

The Shockers could not any runners in scoring position from the second through the eighth inning.

Forsythe registered seven strikeouts.

Wichita State opened the scoring in the second inning when Mikel Mucha doubled scoring Erik Harbutz with the lone Shocker run.

SIU would plate three runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the ninth.

Shocker starter Cale Elam gave up three runs and eight hits before departing in the fifth frame.

Wichita State will meet Creighton in an elimination game Tuesday morning at 9.
