One person hospitalized after beating in north Wichita

WICHITA, Kansas — One person was hospitalized after being severely beaten Saturday night.

Sgt. Jeff Swanson of the Wichita Police Department said 15- to -20 people were causing a disturbance in the street near the intersection of 28th and Wellington in north Wichita.

When police arrived, the crowd, consisting of juveniles as young as 15 years old, dispersed and fled from police.

After police had detained one person, they learned that someone inside a nearby residence had been severely beaten, Sgt. Swanson said.

That person was rushed to Via Christi on St. Francis in serious condition with blunt force trauma injuries.

Police are investigating the cause of both the beating and the disturbance.
