Mississippi man arrested for the murder of a Garden City man

Fred Schmidt

GARDEN CITY, Kansas — A man wanted for the 2011 murder of a Garden City man has been arrested in Mississippi.

Thirty-three-year-old Fred Schmidt was arrested in D’iberville, Mississippi in connection with the March 2011 stabbing death of 25-year-old Jeffery Nichols.

Schmidt was originally charged with second-degree murder claiming self defense, but that charge was dropped when the Finney County Attorney’s office tried to up the charge to first-degree murder.

A Finney County judge disagreed allowing Schmidt to walk free, but the Kansas Court of Appeals sided with prosecutors last year and law enforcement had been looking for him ever since.

Schmidt is being held at a jail in Gulfport awaiting extradition to Kansas.
