Wichita State softball team eliminated in conference tournament

OMAHA, Neb. – Wichita State’s 2013 season came to an end in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament dropping a 7-1 decision to fifth-seeded Southern Illinois in Omaha.

Kelsey Ashton put Southern Illinois on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a bases clearing two-out double to right centerfield after the Salukis had sandwiched a bunt single between a pair of walks to load the bases.

The Shockers got one run back in the third on a RBI single to second base by All-MVC First Team centerfielder Erin Carney. Danika Miller scored on the play after reaching on a leadoff throwing error by SIU pitcher Brittney Lang.

Sloan Anderson came in in relief of Armagost after a walk to start the third inning. The Salukis proceeded to load the bases for the second time in three innings with Michelle Glenn capitalizing on the opportunity with a RBI single up the middle to score Meredith Wilson from third to give SIU a 4-1 lead.

Both pitchers took control of the game from there as Anderson and Lang traded scoreless frames over the next two and a half innings until the Salukis’ Jayna Spivey drove in Morgan Barchan to extend the SIU lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Spivey scored two batters later on a fielding error by Ali Vandever at shortstop to pad the SIU lead to 6-1. The Salukis tacked on its third run of the inning on a single up the middle by Wilson.

All of Southern Illinois’ seven runs came with two outs.

Lang allowed one unearned run and three hits over seven innings of work with seven strikeouts in the complete game victory for SIU.

Wichita State’s season ends with a record of 19-33.
